Time to pull this white elephant off its butt

The 2,000-seat Centre in the Square concert venue, in Kitchener, needs to target younger audiences, Joel Rubinoff says.

If you read the job posting for the Centre in the Square’s new chief executive officer — the person who will replace departed general manager Jamie Grant and who, it is hoped, will guide the region’s concert jewel back to financial glory after several years of middling results — it’s clear the board of directors has, in its wordy, jargonesque way, specific goals in mind: “to build upon the Centre’s assets going forward … to achieve a renewed vision … to monetize more fully its potential as a performance venue.’’

Museum staff vote in favour of strike

About 150 workers at the Canadian Museum of Nature may soon walk off the job after their bargaining committee voted 78 per cent in favour of a strike mandate on Feb. 15, the union representing them said.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) said a conciliation session is slated for Tuesday between the union and the museum. They said workers will be in a legal strike position on March 12. Researchers and maintenance workers are among the affected employees.

Job security, shift work and scheduling are key concerns, the union said.

“We are hopeful that with this overwhelming strike vote, the museum will get the message that our members are serious about service to the public and not prepared to accept concessions,” said Max Joly, president of PSAC local 70395 at the museum.
